Description

Decades in the making and incorporating the translational efforts of many different scholars under the editorship of scholar Max Muller, the Sacred Books of the East series was a monumental work of scholarship originally published in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The aim of the series was to place the "historical and comparative study of religions on a solid foundation" by presenting in English translation the major scriptures of seven major religions/philosophies of the East: Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, Confucianism, Taoism, Islam, and Zoroastrianism, with an emphasis on those religions and texts that had hitherto not been translated or under-represented in English. Each section/text is accompanied by a lengthy introduction and footnotes. A list summarising what each volume covers is provided in the accompanying photograph. This edition is a reprint from 1993, as published by Aryan Books International (New Delhi), with each volume containing, on average, several hundred pages. The set is in fair condition, with most of the defects being surface wear and not interfering with legibility. Dustjackets are frayed, torn, peeling, and stained in places. Boards are rubbed and worn along the edges. Page edges are occasionally stained, as are endpapers. The endpaper of one volume is missing; a fold-out chart in another volume is slightly torn, but complete. One volume has a damaged spine and a cut to the front free endpaper. There are small tears to the last page of one volume. The title page is absent from a couple of volumes. There are also some printing defects, but none of the flaws mentioned above interfere with the text, for the texts are clean and the bindings firm, making this a sound reading or reference copy.
