Now an actress with a touring repertory company, living out of a suitcase, Clara has forgotten the benevolent tyranny of her Catholic parents in her passion for the actor Stephen Tye. But when Stephen betrays her, Clara betrays herself - she marries Archie, the finace she discarded four years earlier, a man of whom her father thoroughly approves. This symbolic gesture is Clara's desperate attempt to rekindle the safety of childhood, but neither Archie nor Clara are children now.
