"During the 50s in the Irish countryside, there were no televisions, telephones or indoor toilets. The only people who had cars were priests, doctors and rich farmers. Radios were only beginning to appear in most people's houses. For the young, evenings were spent (playing games) in local fields...and listening to the latest pop records (on the radio). Only a few homes had record players. The older members of society typically retired to the bar. The single other passion for the old and young was the local cinema".
