The strangled cry

Collected essays written over the years from 1940 to 1961. Included are the title piece, a searching evaluation of the literature of reaction as exemplified by the works of Koestler, Orwell, Whittaker Chambers and Pasternak; selections from Strachey's war writings; an essay on India; and a section called simply "People," which begins with an article on the Webbs and ends with a brilliant study of the German tragedy in terms of its economic causes.
