Description

This is the story of the adventures of an RAF observation unit which was spread in the outposts of six men in the forests of the Ganges delta and along the wide hills of the Burma frontier during the early years of the Japanese war in world war II. It took fourteen days to reach one post by river and jungle track: another was approached by mule ride. There are descriptions of these and other journeys also of the wider India--Delhi, Calcutta Himalayan hill stations--with glimpses of Kipling's India just before it vanished for ever. The author was a keen observer to get to know the various peoples of India, including the Lushai tribe in the hills; there are some interesting comments on the varied political groups of pre-independence India and on the background of the Japanese war.
