This is a collection of papers read at a confernce held at sSwedish Reserah Institue in Istanbul in October, 1996. Scholars from Sweden, Germany, India, Iran, Egypt, Syria and Turkey participated. the papers analyse the impact of democracy and civil society in the Muslim world. The militarization of Muslim societies, note some scholars, has directly resulted in the stunting civil society, and consequently of democracy.
