Collection of seven short stories by one of the most acclaimed of the Chinese new wave writers. The stories portray women in contemporary Chinese society, faced with the conflicting demands of Confucian patriarchy, communist self-sacrifice and imported Western culture. Includes one story set in Australia. Contains a foreword by Sneja Gunew and a discussion of the author's work written by her translator, Chris Berry. The author came to Australia following the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989, and is now a Visiting Fellow at La Trobe University. Her other publications include novels, songs, and plays, including TKiss Yesterday Goodbye' and TThe Gate to Paradise'.
