Description
Musadiq Sanwal: 3rd August 1963 — 17th January 2014 A poet, theatre director, documentary producer, designer and founding editor of dawn.com - Musadiq Sanwal found creative expression though multiple channels. Born in Multan, ʻthe city of saintsʼ, the Sufi philosophy influenced Musadiqʼs life, music and writings. Sanwal trained at the National College of Arts Lahore, was a revivalist of Punjabi & indigenous arts and a founding member of the Punjab Lok Rehas. His adopted city was Karachi where Sanwal founded the Baang theatre group shaping raw youth from violence afflicted areas and made a niche in Pakistan’s theatre history with original, avante garde productions. Sanwal also worked on documentary productions, politically investigative videos, multimedia design, research on indigenous performers and rights advocacy for marginalized communities through different organizations. As a cyber journalist in London (2003-08) he was amongst the select journalists that made the BBC Online news recognized as a leading example of Urdu journalism at that time. Sanwal was the founding editor of DAWN.com (2008-14) establishing the first online newsroom in Pakistan and transforming Dawn from an e-paper to interactive online news and a portal of alternative and intellectual voices. DAWN’s Urdu website came in 2013 pursued and supervised by Sanwal while fighting cancer. Sanwal’s book of poetry "Yeh Natamam si aik zindagi jo guzri hai" has been published posthumously and a cd of his music is being launched in December 2015
